$20 m investment by Piramal Glass Ceylon Plc. for new Plant at Horana

Glass production capacity would be doubled to plus 200 MT per day. Rathmalana factory to be relocated.

Piramal Glass Ceylon Plc has signed an agreement with BOI (Board of investment) on 19th July’06, to invest approximately US$ 20 million for a new plant at Horana to double its production capacity to 200 MT plus per day.

Piramal Glass Ceylon Plc (PGC), the only glass container manufacturer in Sri Lanka decided for capacity expansion to cater to the growing demand in the country. The decision of expansion was taken as PGC celebrated its 50th year of unbroken continuous service to its customers in Sri Lanka.

Ceylon Glass, under ownership and management of Gujarat Glass Pvt Limited, India, in which the latter has a 54% equity stake, signed the Agreement with the Board of investment (BOI). The construction is scheduled to commence next month and the new plant would be ready in approximately 12 months period.

Vijay Shah, Chairman & MD of Gujarat Glass and Sanjay Tiwari, CEO, President/ Exec Director, Ceylon Glass said that the investment of $20 m for a new plant will be on a 26 acres block of land, under Honorable President Mahinda Rajapakse’s ‘300 Enterprises Programme’.

The company funding programme for new investment through consortium local banks syndicated by DFCC bank.

Riding on the Appreciation, Faith & Trust shown by the existing customer along with the interest of certain prospective international customers, Ceylon Glass has decided to go ahead with the expansion by installing a new state of art facility. This expansion would not only almost double its capacity but PGC also plans to bring & add new technology to the art of glass container manufacturing.

Sanjay Tiwari, CEO, President/ Exec Director, Ceylon Glass also said, Ceylon Glass which emerged as the only Asian Glass manufacturer in yr 2004 to have coloring forehearth, will utilize the $ 20 m investment for new 200 MT regenerative furnace along with addition of state of art new glass formation machinery, packing & inspection machinery, latest laboratory equipments etc. Ceylon Glass’s currently manufacture diverse array of bottles ranging for manufacturers of Pharma, Cosmetics & Perfumes, Areated water, Food & Beverage, Liquor & Wine bottles etc. This new facility will ensure flexibility to meet varied customers requirements with reduced lead time and wider range and color of bottles.

PGC will also focus at the expansion programme to expand its international presence in markets like Europe and Asia pacific region. This investment in new technology and value additions would also make PGC embark as a quality glass manufacturer in the international market.

This expansion marks another new milestone under the new management of Gujarat Glass Limited.
